Begin Again–For the First Time

We are approaching the end of another year, and though we cannot change where we have been or what we have done, we can influence where we go and what we do in the future.

The best way to “begin again for the first time” is to start with ourselves. As the familiar saying goes, “The biggest enemy that we will face is the enemy that is us.” We often blame others, or our job, or a lack of time, or too much stress, but we must look inside before looking outside.

Next, decide to always tell the truth and nothing but the truth. As Jesus declared, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32). We must be honest with ourselves about where we are, and what we have to work with, and we must be able to look at the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of ourselves, and then consider our assets. Asking ourselves the tough questions, like do we have a strong spiritual base, do we have peace of mind, and do we truly believe we can accomplish our goals, will help to build a strong foundation for success.

Lastly, we must make up our minds that no matter how difficult our goal may seem, we will just keep pressing forward. The realization of a goal requires that we do something toward it every day until we achieve it. The problem is that life has a way of providing us with plenty of excuses to stop pursuing our objectives, but we must be determined to keep going toward our goal no matter what the circumstances.

“If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes.” (Mark 9:23) I believe this coming year will be the best and most productive year for each and every one of you! Every area of your life can be as fulfilling as you want it to be–just make a few changes, and begin again, for the first time!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year, Family!

"It Happened One Night" in November...

Get ready for the biggest event of this year, as Meaka and Nelson tie the knot this Saturday, November 10, 2007! Theirs will be a themed wedding, where all guests are encouraged to dress in true Hollywood glamour from the black and white film era. And just like in the movie “It Happened One Night," the Foxboro Pavillion will resemble an old Hollywood night club. Now that sounds like the place to be this weekend! Congratulations, Meaka and Nelson-we know God will continue to bless you as you enter the next phase of your journey together!

Happy Birthday!
Jazzmyn Cansler, AnnaMaria Lopez, Tanisha Carrington, Edward Corbin, Jr., Tiyana Silva, Shaun Cox, Dante Silva, Barbara Peacock, Crystal Reddick, Nadine Hudson, and Alika Burke celebrate birthdays in this month of November. Happy Birthday to each of you, and may you be blessed with much love on your special day! (See our Calendar of Events for dates.)

Brilliance at UMass Dartmouth!
Congratulations to our cousin, Bryan Riddick, who started his freshman year at UMass Dartmouth in September, and already showed his brilliant star quality as he came in first to win the 1-meter diving event against Babson College in the team’s opener! Bryan showed them what he’s made of when he joined with his Corsair teammates to capture first place in that same meet for the 200 freestyle relay. If you’ve been reading our newsletter, then you already know about our brilliant young star. Many times, Bryan helped Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury, CT get to championship status with his extraordinary swimming talents, so it’s no surprise to us that he’s already doing the same for UMass Dartmouth. Great work, Bryan–you make us all so very proud! Want to show Bryan how proud you really are? Attend one of his meets and cheer him on! See the schedule on our Calendar of Events.

Season's Over, But He Certainly Gave Them Something to Talk About!
He got 15 sacks this season, and made at least one touchdown per game (win or lose). He even had high school scouts checking him out, like Cathedral High School’s head coach. Our cousin Andre Reddick gave everyone something to talk about this year during the Pop Warner Football season. He played so that EVERYONE from their momma to his math teacher was coming to the games. His mom, Christine says “I’m waiting patiently to watch him play at Gillette Stadium. He keeps telling me, “Ma, family first, y’all got that.”” And you better believe his family’s got his back! We’ll be waiting for those who ever doubted his skills just to say “we told you so!” You go, Andre – we are very, very proud of you! Stay true to yourself, and you can (and will) have it all!

We Want to Hear About It!
We know there’s plenty good news about our family and friends, so please remember to share it with us. We want to know about each and every one of our families’ accomplishments. So whether it’s the baby who took her first steps or spoke her first words, or your daughter’s dance recital or son’s play, or you received an award or recognition at the job or at school, please let us know. Visit our Contact Us page to send an email. We’d love to hear all about it!

Say Cheese!
We love seeing pictures of you, and want our website to be where you send folks when you’re bragging about our gorgeous family members! Please send them along, and we’ll gladly add them to our Gallery Page. You can paste a link to pictures you have online (like at AOL pictures or Shutterfly) or attach them from your computer to an email, and send to valnraleigh@hotmail.com. If they’re not online or on your computer, please mail your photos to Valerie Haynes for scanning at the address listed on the Contact Us page, and we'll mail back the originals.

Join Us for Some Fun in the Sun!
Plans are underway for a “Grand Strand Experience” in Myrtle Beach, SC June 27-30, 2008. This will be our second year of gathering and fellowshipping with family and friends in more than 17 years. So please–if we missed you this year, we especially want to see you next year, and hope you’ll consider joining us! And if we did see you in July, we can’t wait to see you again–because we love each and every one of you–our family, our friends. Please visit our Reunion Page for more information.

October - A Big Month for Awareness!

This is a big month for awareness, and there are three issues that we hope you make an effort to be informed about. The first one, Breast Cancer Awareness, is the one most of us know of when we talk about awareness in October. It has become the second-most common cancer among black women, surpassed only by lung cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. More than 19,000 black women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and while it’s about 12% lower in black women than in white women, the mortality rate is much higher, and will often strike black women at an earlier age than white women.

This month is also set aside for Lupus Awareness, a disease which many people of color are stricken with, but know little about. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys. Anyone can get lupus, but the majority of people who have it are women, and black women are three times more likely to get lupus than white women. It is also more common in Hispanics, Latinos, Asians, and Indians.

Lastly, October marks Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Down syndrome occurs in one out of every 733 live births, and today, more than 350,000 people in the U.S. have this genetic condition. This chromosomal abnormality affects people of all ages, races and economic levels. Today, individuals with Down syndrome are active participants in the educational, vocational, social and recreational aspects of our communities. There are more opportunities than ever before for individuals with Down syndrome to develop their abilities, discover their talents and realize their dreams – in fact, more teens and adults with Down syndrome are graduating from high school, going to college, finding employment and living independently.

If someone you know has Down syndrome, lupus, or breast cancer, why not take some time this month to find out more? Because making it your business to know means you care, and it’s an excellent way to say “I love you!” Visit the
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month website, the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. website, and the National Down Syndrome Society website for more information.

Don't Forget to Count Those Baby Steps!

Happy New Year, everyone! Time to set those resolutions that many of us almost always find difficult to keep - mostly because life has a funny way of throwing us unexpected curveballs. Here's a tip for you: keep in mind while you set goals this year that your plans can and will change, so remember to remain flexible. Flexibility is required to complete anything but the simplest goal. Sometimes the goal itself will even change, so don’t forget to recognize partial successes at every step along the way. Just as a resolution isn't accomplished the day it's stated, neither is it accomplished the day you reach your goal. You can make progress in small increments, so remember to count those baby steps! When you do, you’ll make the words “Happy New Year” hold true until you hear them this time next year!

Kudos to Our Swimming Champ!

Cousin Bryan Riddick wasted no time getting back on track as he recently qualified with his very first dive for CT’s State Open in December of last year. Bryan is truly an inspiration to us all, for his story is one of true grit, dedication and perseverance. And don’t think we’re just tooting our horns because he’s family! When you show such determination, someone will notice! Click here to read a copy of an awesome article about Bryan published late last year in a CT newspaper. And remember to show some love and attend one of Bryan’s meets. Click here for the schedule or visit our Calendar of Events for swim meet dates. Kudos to you, Bryan! We’re all beaming with pride when we talk about you!

This Month’s Birthday Greetings

Happy birthday to Danasha Reddick, Jamie Cansler, Joseph Bradley, Aryn Corbin, Guy Riddick, LaTeisha Corbin, Shayne Harrington, Mitchell Jones, Kendael Corbin, and Quandejah White. We hope you enjoy every moment of your special day!

'Tis the Season!

The holiday season can be a difficult time – frustration, depression, anxiety, hopelessness, weariness, exhaustion, procrastination, dread – and things get real complicated when you add illness or loss of a family member in the mix.  If you know of a family or friend who is experiencing any of these things, do what you can to help them get through it. A card, a smile, a phone call – these things may seem simple, but even if you think it’s not enough, many times, it can make all the difference in the world! And if you can’t do any of those things, take a moment and say a prayer – simply remembering to open your mouth, heart, and mind to God when you think of your loved one is a great way to start! And please don't stop there – 'tis the season, so ask Him to remember to give peace to all who can’t seem to find it on their own!

It’s About Balancing Hard Work and Dedication!
Just ask Pamela Corbin-Riddick - not only does this wife and mother of two hold a full-time job while attending the University of Connecticut, she’s also a Program Administrator at Granville Academy Waterbury in CT, one of six Granville Academy National Affiliates. Granville Academy National, founded by William “Bill” Granville, is a free after-school program that gives our inner-city youths up and down the East Coast an opportunity to learn business and industry concepts, and provide them the fundamental skills and tools for use in business, finance, science and engineering.

Cousin Pam has worked with Granville Academy Waterbury for five years now, and she’s given a new meaning to the phrase, “where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
She created a very successful English Enrichment Program, which is used by all Granville Academy affiliates today, and last year, Pam received an award for “Outstanding Service” to the Academy and its students.

We are awfully proud of you, Pam. And just like those who know first hand how your hard work and dedication have made the difference, we give thanks to God for blessing us with you!

Lateisha Corbin wins the Campus Life Award!
We knew this young lady would give us something to talk about, and Lateisha certainly hasn’t let us down! During family weekend, on October 14, 2006, Emmanuel College hosted their traditional ceremony where students explained the history of their school, and those majoring in Psychology told of what their degree will mean to them. Cousin Lateisha Corbin received the Campus Life Award. Lateisha earned this award for a multitude of reasons: her outstanding abilities as a basketball player, her inspiring role at Emmanuel as a mentor and Resident Assistant, and her strong initiative to bring cultural programs to Emmanuel College. But most important of all, this award recognized Lateisha for serving as Secretary for two of Emmanuel’s biggest groups: the Black Student Union and the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC). She shows us all what hard work is about, and managed to keep her GPA up during the process! We commend you, Teisha, and proudly recognize you as one of our family’s best chances for the future of our youth!

Actions speak louder than words, so why not show Lateisha your appreciation and attend one of her upcoming basketball games this November? She’s the starting forward her Emmanuel College Saints! Please check our calendar for date information.

Halloween – Ancient Ritual or Evil Worship?

The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.

One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. Naturally, the still-living did not want to be possessed. So on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess.

So, although some cults may have adopted Halloween as their favorite "holiday," the day itself did not grow out of evil practices. It grew out of the rituals of Celts celebrating a new year, and out of medieval prayer rituals of Europeans. And today, even many churches have Halloween parties or pumpkin carving events for the kids. Have a happy & safe Halloween, everyone! For those of you who will be out there trick or treating this year, read on for some safety tips you may have heard before but are worth hearing again – for the sake of our children.

Children should go out during daylight hours only unless accompanied by a responsible adult.

Plan a safe route so parents know where their older kids will be at all times. Set a time for their return home.

Make sure your children are old enough and responsible enough to go out by themselves. Let your children know not to cut through back alleys and fields. Make sure they know to stay in populated places and don't go off the beaten track. Stay in well lighted areas.

Stop only at familiar houses in your own neighborhood unless an adult accompanies them.

Small children should never be allowed to go out alone on Halloween. Make sure an older sibling or adult is with them.

Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by you. Instruct your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car.

Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars. Let them know that they should stay together as a group if going out to Trick or Treat without an adult.

Honoring the Legacy, Building on the Future
The 21st Century Black Massachusetts Conference, now in its 5th year, founded by Senator Dianne Wilkerson, will hold a 2-day conference next weekend. The Youth Summit will take place on Friday, November 3rd from 3pm-7pm at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, where youth of color will take center stage for some hard-hitting straight talk about what it will take to refocus the energy that too often ends in conflict.

The conference continues on Saturday, November 4th from 9:30a-3pm at the Hynes Convention Center, where leaders of color from across the state and invited guests from across the United States, will join for a day of strategizing to answer the question this question: If there is one thing you would say to the next Governor of Massachusetts that you think ought to be done to provide opportunity to all residents, what would it be? The keynote speaker for this day’s event will be the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Attendance to this very special event is free, but register now to ensure your seat(s). Click here to find out how.

Know Your Genes

If you are a direct descendant of the Andrades of Cabo Verde, then there's a strong possibility that you have genetically inherited a sickle cell trait, which is very common in people whose ancestors hail from Africa. If you inherited the trait, you are considered a "carrier." A carrier has a normal hemoglobin gene (A) and a sickle hemoglobin gene (S). The combination of these two genes will give you the sickle cell trait. A carrier generally has no symptoms and lives a normal life, but most importantly, a carrier can pass the sickle cell gene on to their children.

If two people with a sickle cell trait have a baby, there is a one in four chance (25%) the baby will have two sickle cell genes, causing SS disease. commonly known as sickle cell anemia; one in four chance (25%) the baby will have two normal genes (AA); and a two in four chance (50%) the baby will inherit one normal gene and one sickle cell gene (AS).

A sickle cell gene tells the body to make an abnormal form of a protein, called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen to all parts of the body and gives blood its red color. The abnormal hemoglobin is what causes the red blood cells to become hard and curved like a sickle. It takes two copies of the sickle cell gene (SS) for the body to make the abnormal hemoglobin, which causes the most dangerous form of sickle cell disease.

Another form of sickle cell anemia is SC disease, which occurs when one inherits a sickle cell hemoglobin gene from one parent, and a hemoglobin C gene from the other. A hemoglobin C gene interacts with a sickle cell gene to produce some of the same problems as SS disease. On average, those with SC disease have milder symptoms than do those with SS disease, however, this is only an average - some people with SC disease have a condition equal in severity to SS disease.

About 1 in 40 African-Americans has the hemoglobin C trait and 1 in 12 has the sickle cell trait. Please take time to know your genes. If you have a sickle cell trait or a hemoglobin C trait, please learn more about them, and what affect they could have on you, your children, or your grandchildren. For more information on sickle cell anemia, click here, and for some practical tips on preventing a sickle cell crisis, click here.

Reaching for Excellence

Due to outstanding academic achievements, Tykia White, Cousin Damian’s daughter, was nominated as a National Scholar to represent the state of Massachusetts at the 2007 National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC). The Congressional Youth Leadership Council (CYLC) hosts the NYLC, and their mission is to foster and inspire young people to achieve their full leadership potential. CYLC scholars represent students with high rankings in both academic performance and community leadership. The NYLC is a program designed to instruct and enrich promising students in a hands-on, experiential atmosphere while preparing them for a lifetime of leadership. Each student is not just chosen based on academic achievement, but they are hand-selected by distinguished educators, mentors and/or CYLC program alumni, ensuring that every one of them possesses the drive and determination to emerge as a future and world leader. (sources: CYLC and NYLC home pages.)

While Tykia has been nominated to attend this very prestigious event, she’s running out of time! She needs sponsors to help complete her enrollment to attend the conference scheduled for the spring of next year. We urge you to find it in your hearts to sponsor Tykia. Although she's already gathered $600, she needs an additional $1,200 to cover the cost, which includes travel and tuition expenses to the conference. The deadline to complete the enrollment process is very close, and applications for the NYLC may exceed space availability. We don’t want Tykia to miss this opportunity, so she needs you to send a sponsorship donation today or as soon as possible, before the week of October 27. Any donation, no matter what the amount, will be greatly appreciated! Mail a check or money order payable to: Tykia White, 622 Dudley Street, Dorchester MA 02125, or contact her aunt, Shelia Pierce, at shlpierce@yahoo.com for more information on how you can help.

Tykia is doing her part to reach for excellence, and she’s giving us another reason to be proud of our children, so let’s not sit idle – send your sponsorship right away!

We congratulate you, Tykia – well done! Keep reaching for excellence, because the future of our young people depends on you and others like you to make a difference! (Click here to view a copy of Tykia’s letter to potential sponsors.)

Anyone for Cocktails?

Cousin Christine hosted a cocktail sip at her place, which proved to be a pleasant distraction for those looking for a nice way to wind down the busy workweek. There was plenty of food and drink, good company, great atmosphere, and reports say that Cousin Aleta (Lea, as most of us affectionately call her) was the life of the party! Now we know who to look for when we need to add some spice come next year at the Reunion, right Lea?

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis among African American women, and among women nationwide (source: National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, Cancer Statistics Branch, 2000). Studies have shown that when African American women follow the same preventive measures as white women, their death rates from breast cancer are very similar. However, African American women are more likely than white women to be diagnosed at later stages of the disease and are more likely to die from it. So this month, let’s encourage all women to take charge of their own breast health. Whether it includes practicing regular self-breast exams or making sure to schedule an annual mammogram, every little bit counts! Please visit the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month website (NBCAM) for more information.

All that Jazz!

Going into its sixth year, the Beantown Jazz Festival was bigger and better than ever! In fact, founder Darryl Settles knew more than anyone that this event would be huge this year, and was very happy to turn the event’s production over to the world-renowned Berklee School of Music.

From the kick-off concert at Berklee Performance Center Friday to the Gospel Jazz Brunch at the Westin Copley Place Hotel on Sunday, which featured Kendrick Oliver's New Life Orchestra and vocalist Kevin Mahogany, the Beantown Jazz Festival took the Boston Jazz set to another level! And if you are a true Jazz fan, than you know that those who performed last weekend gave us some of the best music Boston has seen in quite some time!

The big name for Friday night’s concert was pianist McCoy Tyner, but bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding truly set it off, backed by a band made up of fellow Berklee alumni Christian Scott, Mike Tucker, Lyndon Rochelle, and Berklee assistant professor, Doug Johnson

Saturday’s outdoor festivities were the “the bomb" - and if good food wasn’t enough to draw a crowd, the great music throughout the day made it difficult for the Festival to be nothing but a success! Those that attended were treated to something special. Guitarist Doug Wamble rocked one stage, with legendary vocalist Patrice Rushen and DJ Logic along for the ride. And it was hard to not be lured to another stage by alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett and his quartet of young and talented musicians. Then there was trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis (yes, that’s baby brother of Wynton and Branford) on the aptly titled Marsalis Music Stage, who kicked off some sounds that appealed to not just the hearts of the true Jazz lover, but music lovers across the board! Let’s not even talk about what Cuban composer/pianist Omar Sosa, bassist Christian McBride, or vocalist Carmen Lundy and many other talented young musicians did for the ears of the more than 40,000 in attendance!

Yes, Jazz is alive and well, and lives in Boston, MA - we owe a huge “thank you” to Darryl Settles for making sure we know it! Why not show your gratitude and check out his place, Bob's Southern Bistro, formerly known as Bob the Chef’s, Boston’s long-time soul food restaurant. Darryl kept with tradition and still serves southern cuisine, but he’s added some Cajun dishes, too! And you can’t even say Cajun without thinking about Jazz. So if you didn’t get enough of all that Jazz last weekend, Bob’s Southern Bistro from Thursday thru Sunday afternoons is the place to be. And don’t forget to say thanks to Darryl Settles for giving us an event that Boston can be proud of!

Family Reunion Schedule of Events

The Andrade Family and Friends Planning Committee held its second meeting last week, and the schedule of events has been set! Plans for the weekend of July 27-29, 2007 include a dance Friday night, a big BBQ Saturday afternoon, and Sunday services with plans for recreational activities later that day. Let's Give It Up for Those Who Paved the Way

We often take for granted things people have done, and many have sacrificed more than we’ll ever know. During certain points in history, our people where given hope by individuals who helped to open the eyes of others, giving all insight into brilliant minds some people never imagined could exist. Many people of color had much to do with some important facts in history, and it is our responsibility to make sure our children are reminded of such things. We have opportunities today that we didn’t have years ago, and it’s up to us to teach our children to appreciate the people they may not always hear about in their history books. Many sacrificed much, and today, our children don’t have to deal with some of the hardships experienced 50 years before.

We hope you take time to remind our children of the long, hard struggle those before us endured. Let’s encourage our children to recognize the people who made a difference - and how many of them did so at their own expense. Read on for some anniversary dates that occur this month in October, and share them with your family. Let us all remember the contributions of these individuals, as well as the many others like them who paved the way.

Oct 1, 1962: After four others applied to the University of Mississippi and were subsequently rejected, James Meredith decided he would not be denied because of his skin color, and became the first black person to attend Ole Mississippi.

Oct 2, 1967: Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first black Supreme Court Justice.

Oct 11, 1887: Alexander Miles, a black man, patented an electric elevator that improved the opening/closing of doors, including the shaft. As countless accidents occurred when the shaft door would be left open, his design ultimately helped saved lives.

Oct 14, 1834: Henry Blair, the only inventor to be identified in the Patent Office records as "a colored man", received a patent for the seed planter. Blair was the second black inventor to receive a patent at this time in history - the first was Thomas Jennings.

Oct 16: 1859: John Brown, a white man who spent much of his life fighting to abolish slavery, led the raid on Harpers Ferry.

Calling All Family & Friends!
This summer, there was talk of a family reunion and some of our family members decided to take the initiative and get the ball rolling! In August of this year, we introduced The Andrade Family & Friends and the Andrade Family Tree websites as tools to assist with this effort. You only need to visit the family tree website to witness the number of direct descendants from Olegario and Maria Andrade. There are over 180 names already entered into the database, most of which are living family and extended family members! That is a staggering amount, and we are still adding! We know you are out there, and we need your help!! We are in constant search of information (names, date of births, date of deaths, anniversaries, relationships). Please take time to view our Family Tree Website (click here to request access information). Let's give our children a tool they can use for life!

If you are a family member or friend, please join us! We need your support! While some of our grandparents, like Agnes Encarnanze and Joseph Andrade, are watching from above, others like Anna Brooks, Julia Silva, and Elsie Lair, are right here with the rest of us, waiting to know you! And while many of us have grown up together, there are still many of us who’ve not had the opportunity to meet one another! If you are a family member or friend, then you know the task at hand is a huge undertaking! We implore you, better yet, we challenge you! For the sake of our heritage, and most importantly, for the sake of our children, we need all family and/or extended family members to GET INVOLVED! Click here to contact us. Let's all come together and help build our legacy into something we can all recognize as a family trait... unity, loud and clear!

Plans are currently underway for the Family Reunion, tentatively set to take place July 2007 in Taunton, MA, where our grandparents' were raised. We desperately need a head count of everyone who wants to participate. ALL ARE WELCOME! Please click here to contact Christina Emerson (or call her at the number shown on our Reunion Page) as soon as possible with your family's head count! If you cannot reach Christina, please contact any of the Planning Committee members listed on the Reunion Page.

Our Planning Committee mailed correspondence to those we had address information for, however, our list is short - an indication that we need you to get the word out! If you received a copy of the Reunion Information Letter and Registration Form, please return it to Christina Emerson at the address listed on page 2 of the letter or click here to send her an email. You can also visit the Contact Us page to send us an email or get other mailing address information. Spread the word about our intentions for a Family Reunion. Let Your Voice Be Heard!
Last month, we learned the sad news that WILD radio, the R&B station out of Boston, MA that most of us grew up listening to, was going off the air. A farewell to WILD was held last week at Slade's Bar & Grill, and at least one of our family members made it a point to attend. Here's an important note from Christina Emerson:

Hi all, I went to Slade's last Thursday and we were told by Coach Willie May the deal is not a done deal yet! WILD needs us, our friends, family, and community, to email the FCC and let them know what WILD means to us and that we want them to stay. The more people we can get to do this, the louder our voice, the better our chances are to be heard. There will be a rally at City Hall Plaza in Boston, MA on October 9, 2006. Most of WILD's past and present staff will be there with more information and possible proposals. Bring as many people as you can and tell as many people as you can; they need us to turn out by the thousands. Come on Boston - let them know we are here - from C. Emerson
Let's take heed to Christina's request and let your voice be heard! Here is a list of people to contact at the FCC about support for WILD:

Remember National Grandparents Day!
Did you know 4 million children in 3 million households are being raised by their grandparents? Would you be surprised to learn that more than 5 million children live in a household with a grandparent present?

It seems that grandmas and grandpas, formerly in the business of "spoiling" grandchildren, are taking on additional responsibilities that involve raising their children's children.

National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. For 2006, Grandparents Day falls on Sept. 10th.

For all that those grandparents do, we celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of our senior citizens on Grandparents Day. How will you mark the occasion?

Had Enough?
In January 2006, Illinois state Senator Barack Obama delivered the closing address at the Take Back America conference in Washington DC. In one of the best closing addresses this country has been privy to, he said, "Don't let anyone tell you we don't know what we stand for and don't doubt it yourselves. We know who we are. And in the end, we know that it isn't enough to just say that you've had enough. So let it be said that we are the party of opportunity." Senator Obama believes "this is our time to forge our own destiny... " We need to make use of the opportunities available today, and take back America! Are You Ready for Some Football?

We told you to keep an eye on those Mission Hill Buccaneers, and Andre Carter didn’t let us down! He scored two touchdowns last Saturday during the Mayor’s Cup Pop Warner Football Jamboree. The annual event, sponsored by some of New England’s finest athletes and organizations, was held at Madison Park High in Roxbury, MA. Keep up the good work, Andre!

Remember to visit our Calendar of Events for Buccaneers’ schedule information - then go check out Andre and his cousins, fellow Buccaneers Christian and Kyree Reddick, in the next few weeks. You know Uncle Billy (their grandfather) is probably watching from his spot up above loving every minute of it!

Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day is much more than the end of summer  - it is a holiday unlike most others, honoring not public figures or war victories but the everyday worker.

The country’s first Labor Day parade was held on a Tuesday in September, by the Knights of Labor in New York City in 1882. The Knights had a reputation for being all-inclusive - women, blacks (after 1883), and employers were accepted as members, while bankers, lawyers, gamblers, stockholders, and liquor manufacturers were excluded because they were considered unproductive members of society.

In 1884, the parade was celebrated on the first Monday in September instead of May 1 (known to us now as May Day), the day the Socialist Party felt our country should recognize America's working class. In 1887, the first states to declare Labor Day a holiday were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Finally, in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as a national holiday.

We hope you have a happy and safe Labor Day weekend, and this year, remember to pay tribute to our nation’s strength, freedom and leadership - your mother, father, sister, and brother - and most of all, yourself - the American Worker!

Shining Stars

Our family is full of stars! Like starting forward LaTeisha Corbin – this is her last season as an Emmanuel College Saint. Let’s remember to show our support, and attend some of her games this November! Watch our Calendar of Events for schedule information.

Other family stars on course for success include LaTeisha’s mom, Marsha (Mikki) Corbin, who attends Cambridge College and is going for her Bachelor’s in Business Management/Finance. And Tanisha Carrington, Ronnie Lopes’ granddaughter, is an honors student at Bryman Institute in Boston.

And with stars like LaTeisha and Mikki, no one should be surprised that our younger family members shine like they do! Daniekqua Reddick, Billy Lopes’ granddaughter, starts her junior year at Milton High School in Milton MA – she’s on track to graduate with high honors in 2008. And Billy's grandsons, Andre Carter and Calvin (Kyree) Reddick, play Pop Warner Football - we'll be keeping an eye on these two Mission Hill Buccaneers! Why not show them your support and attend one of their games? Look for dates and times on our Calendar of Events.

And there’s plenty more shining stars to talk about! Like Danielle Jones, Loretta (Lopes) Martin’s granddaughter, who recently received recognition and an invitation from the National Honor Society. Danielle starts her junior year this fall at Sanderson High School in Raleigh, NC, and is the Vice President of The Daughters of Distinction, a club that stresses unity and success for young black females in her community. And Bryan Riddick, Marie (Lopes) Corbin’s grandson, who started his senior year at Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury, CT. Bryan has held the state record for the 50yd breaststroke in CT since middle school, and consistently ranks in the Top 15 for 100M diving in CT and the Naugatuck Valley League. He’s also competes on SH’s Varsity Track Team for the Long and High Jumps. Remember to check back for schedule information on our Calendar of Events so you can attend some of Bryan's competitions, starting in early December.

We are truly blessed to have each and every one of you as part of our family - you give us all a reason to smile!

Wedding Bell News!

Last weekend, some of our family and friends attended an engagement party for Meaka Brown and Nelson Corea. According to "those that were there," the food was delicious, the ambiance was fantastic, and the hostess, Brenda Lopes, Meaka’s grandmother, did an outstanding job!

Meaka, daughter of Dianne Brown and Michael Lopes, is a Recording Studio Manager at Nelson’s Scratchismz Recording Studio in Chestnut Hill, MA, and holds the same position at Soundmirror, Inc. in Jamaica Plain, MA. Meaka has an Associate's Degree in Music Business, and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Audio Production.

Nelson, son of Nelson and Juana Delmy Corea, is an entrepreneur and owns Nelson's Scratchismz Recording Studio. He is also an Audio Engineer, Music Producer, and Graphic Designer. Nelson has an Associate’s in Audio Production, another in Liberal Arts, and a Bachelor’s in Audio and Media Technology.

Nelson and Meaka will tie the knot in late summer 2007. They met in 1993 at the ripe old ages of 14. Twelve years later, they are living proof that young love can survive. Meaka and Nelson, we congratulate you both, and we're very proud to have you as part of our family!

School’s in Session!

It's close to the end of August, and for most of us, that means back to school. We may get some moans and groans, but the first day of school has always been a keeper! Here's a positive message to share once the excitement wears off!

Believe in yourself. Enjoy each and every day. Ask for what you want. Give more than you receive. Understand more, judge less. Have a sense of humor. Insist on being yourself. Join in more. Love and be loved. Make new friends. Nurture your spirit. Overcome adversity. Question conformity. Reach for the stars. Speak the truth. Take personal responsibility. Volunteer your time. Walk through fear. Experience the moment. - Anonymous

Finally! That’s what Brittany Thompson, Bryan Riddick, and Tanea Carrington (great-grandchildren of Agnes (Lopes) Encarnanze), will probably say many times before the spring of 2007, when they become a part of our family’s next generation of high school graduates! Well done, you guys - we’re so very proud of you!

And we can’t help but feel the pride overflow when we start talking about some of our college students! This fall, Leroy Thompson, Jr., Loretta (Lopes) Martin's grandson, will continue his studies at Winston-Salem State University, and Lincoln Ned, Sheila Emerson's grandson, will return to Hampton University - stay tuned for more about these two young men - we know they’ll give us something to talk about!

LaTeisha Corbin, Marie (Lopes) Corbin's granddaugther, a Psychology major at Emmanuel College, will be a senior this year. As a starting power forward on EC’s basketball team, she averages 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots per game, and was 8th in Division III for blocked shots as a junior, finishing the year as No. 13 in the country!! You go, girl!

And how about those Riddicks? We already mentioned Bryan, who’s the youngest, graduating high school next year. Then we have Guy Riddick Jr., who completes his certification in Computer Information Technology in July of 2007, and Guy Riddick Sr., who continues his studies at Hartford Seminary Black Minister's Certificate Program.

And bringing it full circle is Pamela Corbin-Riddick, a senior at the University of Connecticut, majoring in Human Development/Family Studies - she’s holding it steady, too, with a 4.0 GPA! We applaud each of your accomplishments - you inspire us all!

You are invited to join Shayne Harrington on September 2nd for the Annual Johnson Family Barbeque in Stoughton, MA - you won't want to miss this one!! Bring your favorite dish, and don't forget your kids! Hey Shayne - remember to share some of those laughs with us after the bash!

Need directions? Click here to get them. Got a family or friend you want us to know about? Contact Us - we'd love to hear about it!
